alright im not gonna lie, i dont have time to sift through all of these comments to see if anyone else mentioned this but,this is an awesome idea for a blog, Jiggle the ribbon cable, put in the batteries and see if the LCD works properly. Turn off the camera and restart it to see if the lens error has gone away. Trying this will be your decision.
I did hear a click, but it still didn't work. If you need a place to fix it they were exceptional in every way. When you looked at it the lens "hole" was sideways and it would not retract completely inside the camera. In particular, this lens error may occur when the camera is used in certain environmental conditions such as high temperature and/or humidity. The gentle press worked for me.
